Is there anything better than sharing a leisurely weekend breakfast? Breakfast is my favourite meal of the day and it's easy to jazz up if you want to make it romantic. With breakfast there's none of the pressure of dinner when you need to keep up lively conversation. Just bury you head in the newspaper, look up and smile sweetly at each other occasionally. There's no need to organise a three-course gourmet meal--anything goes at breakfast. Feel like keeping it low key? Why don't you both go for a stroll to the local shops and pick up a takeaway coffee, a croissant and the newspapers? Take them to the park, find a spot in the sun and while away the hours. Surprise your partner by collecting the coffee, croissants and papers and bring them back to bed for a leisurely start to the morning?
Breakfast in bed is always a treat--despite the crumbs. It can be as simple or as extravagant as you like. Bacon and eggs, muesli and yogurt, there are heaps of breakfast ideas for breakfast in bed. Start a ritual of a weekend breakfast at cafes and diners. Find a favourite, make it your place and go there every weekend. Sometimes not having to think about what to do for breakfast is a bonus--especially if you're not a morning person. Or if you are more adventurous a great romantic breakfast idea is to sample lots of different cafes. It amazing how many variations there are on an old favourite like an omelette or even something more calorific like Eggs Benedict. If you are organising breakfast in bed as a treat for you partner then there are a few things to consider.
Breakfast Tray Table
Be prepared. You don't want to be dashing down to the corner shop for last minute supplies. Make sure you've got all the ingredients you need. Do as much of it as you can the night before. Cheat if you need to. Reheat frozen croissants, use pancake mixture, get the juice from the bottle. Don't let a lack of skills get in your way. However... Don't punch above your weight. If you're not a great cook then don't make a cheese souffle. You'll only get stressed out and breakfast won't be enjoyable for anyone. It won't be romantic if you're upset about what you've cooked (or messed up). This is one occasion when the thought really does count, so go for simple recipes (and cheat like crazy) for your romantic breakfast. Make it pretty. Lay it out on a tray. If you plan on making breakfast in bed a regular event invest in a pair of those dinky trays with legs, or even the ones with the cushion base with the tray on top. That way your brilliant creation won't topple over. Otherwise a big platter will do the trick. Use a napkin. Put a flower in a small jar. The payoffs in the detail.
If you or your partner are one of those people who finds the whole idea of crumbs in the bed just plain horrible, then a breakfast at the table might be just the thing. The principles are the same for breakfast in bed.
Keep it simple. Cook or prepare what you know you can do successfully. It can be simply delicious with a menu of juice, eggs, toast and coffee or you might like to jazz it up a little. Try an exotic juice like guava, with eggs benedict and espresso. Be as simple or adventurous as you dare with lots of recipes for romantic breakfast ideas. Lay a beautiful table. Use your imagination. It might be a blanket in front of the fire, or a small table on you balcony, or in front of a big window. Have a jug of fresh flowers on the table. Use the prettiest china you can find. It doesn't have to match, in fact it can more charming if it doesn't. Turn the tv off and set the scene with some cafe theme music. It's all in the detail. Preparation is the key. Go shopping the day before and make sure you have everything you need.
Now what to eat? The food you choose to serve at breakfast can be as simple or as extravagant as you want.
Breads are always a great choice. There are many types of bread out there from fruit to sourdough, from rye to wholemeal. Serve it fresh or toasted. Dip it in batter to make french toast. For a true French feel why not serve a croissant. You can either whip down to the nearest bakery to get them fresh, or buy them frozen or packaged and reheat them when needed. Eggs are often a part of breakfast and for good reason--they're so versatile. Have them scrambled, fried, served in their shell or poached. Serve them with hollandaise sauce for Eggs Benedict or with spinach for Eggs Florentine. Boil them, poach them, whatever. A breakfast isn't complete without juice. Orange is always a favourite and freshly-squeezed shows you really care (or maybe have a bit too much time on your hands). But don't be limited by tradition. Introduce some new trends with guava, pomegranate and mango juices. Why not serve up a bloody or virgin mary or even a mimosa. Champagne. Choose the best fizz you can afford and always serve it in a champagne flute. Champagne and strawberries are aphrodisiacs, and who wouldn't feel spoiled sipping on champers and scoffing strawberries. If it worked for Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, then it may well work for you. Pomegranates and mango are also aphrodisiacs, but it might be worth leaving the oysters for another meal.
